Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from freelancers and self-employed professionals

What is the difference between Section 44ADA and Section 44AD?
Section 44ADA applies to specified professionals (doctors, lawyers, architects, CAs, engineers, interior designers) with gross receipts up to โ‚น75 lakhs per year โ€” they declare 50% as profit. Section 44AD applies to small businesses (traders, retailers, contractors) with turnover up to โ‚น3 crores โ€” they declare 8% as profit (6% for digital receipts). Both schemes eliminate the need for maintaining detailed books of accounts.
Do I need to pay advance tax as a freelancer?
Yes. If your total tax liability exceeds โ‚น10,000 in a financial year (after TDS credits), you are required to pay advance tax in 4 instalments: 15% by June 15, 45% by September 15, 75% by December 15, and 100% by March 15. Failure to pay correct advance tax results in interest under Sections 234B and 234C. We calculate and remind you about each installment.
Do I need GST registration as a freelancer?
GST registration is mandatory if your aggregate turnover exceeds โ‚น20 lakhs in a financial year (โ‚น10 lakhs in special category states). For export of services (working with foreign clients), there is no threshold โ€” you can register voluntarily to claim ITC. Unregistered service providers cannot charge GST from clients, so registration is often needed to work with corporate clients.
Which ITR form should I file โ€” ITR-3 or ITR-4?
If you are opting for Section 44ADA or 44AD presumptive taxation, you file ITR-4 (Sugam) โ€” simpler and quicker. However, if you have capital gains, more than one house property, or choose to declare income under the regular scheme (with expenses), you must file ITR-3, which requires P&L and Balance Sheet. We determine the correct form based on your situation.
Can I claim home office expenses as a deduction?
Under Section 44ADA and 44AD presumptive schemes, you cannot additionally claim individual expenses โ€” the preset percentage already covers all expenses. Under ITR-3 (regular scheme), you can claim a proportionate home office expense if part of your home is exclusively used for business. We help you choose the most tax-efficient approach.
